Joint Dalmatian Clubs 2014 Judged by Mrs Julia Swinburn & Sharon Ridgway
Dogs
I was distressed to see such diversity within the breed which to my mind is a sad reflection on the way the breed is going, although some will say that after just 50 years of being in the breed what do I know.
It was noticeable how many dogs had had their nails cut rather than being worn down by correct feet or sound roadwork because many exhibited flat frilly just cut ends that had not even been filed off smooth & I was also astonished how many didn’t have firm second thighs and many had soft pads which again proves the lack of roadwork. Bone was lacking in many and over height leaves a lot to be desired despite our standard saying that overall balance is of prime importance. In moving far too many were strung up and not allowed to lower their heads to balance their action on the move. Also, why show dogs with obvious signs of skin and coat problems leaving them open to further risk.
In the ring there was ample room for movement allowing most dogs to gain balance and show themselves off to advantage, some presentation was excellent with most having a good depth of pigment so clarity in spotting. Heads in general were mostly elegant with sound muzzle and eyes clear and dark.

MINOR PUPPPY D [11.4]
1 GARDINOR’S JARMELSLEY PYRACANTHA AT DAKATA Confident youngster who has many attributes on his side, adequate bone, tight elbows, nicely ribbed, good loin through to sound angulations in rear. Good tail set and length. One who moved steadily using his shoulders to pull through with drive from the rear, feet in good order. Head proportionate and despite his general demeanour he refused to use his ears and flew them which spoilt the overall picture. Clean condition & body pigmentation.
2. CLELAND’S CANDIDALS TENNESSEE VIP AT DEOVOLANTE A well presented lad who just tipped six months so time on his side. One with clean lines, sound bone, already depth in chest and width in front to move cleanly, balanced head and well carried & set on ears, eyes could be a fraction darker to complete the picture. Clarity in spotting and firm topline retained when gaiting, however didn’t like the fact that the handler used his own feet to move the youngster’s feet and it helps if judges instructions are followed.
3. PAGE’S WINFLASH JIMMY CHOO

PUPPY D
[10.4]
1. ALEXANDER’S OFFORDALE MINNESOTA This young lad won with something to spare as he stood out from the word go. Sound round bone in proportion to size which was ideal for age, clean neck into firm shoulders, strong topline through to correct croup then down to positive rear angulations with good width to thigh, hocks standing straight when viewed from behind. Gaited with a steady and balanced driving action both coming and going. Classic head in proportion with well positioned and used ears that had well broken markings, complete pigmentation on nose & eyes, correct bite. Pure short white coat with even spaced spotting as the ‘icing’, on the cake. Best D Puppy. & BO Sex Puppy in Show.
2. CHRISTIE’S SOPHTSPOT EVER READY
Fourth in previous class, this black spotted youngster covered the ground with a long stride in rear; touch loose in front but age as his chest develops and road work should solve that issue. Ample bone, good rib, full pigmentation, well carried tail, correct dentition, proportionate head, & broken spotted ears, clean neck. Nice to see a spotted tail. 3. ADDEY’S CREAGANBREC JACOB MARLEY

JUNIOR D
[2.1]
1. BRYANT’S THEAKSTON TIME TRAVELLER This dog stood alone, full pigmentation, balanced head correct bite, clear eyes, well set & carried ears, clean neck line into shoulders, clear spotting, round bone but plenty tall enough. Tail a touch low set and he was loose in his pasterns.

YEARLING D [7] This class certainly proved a challenge with me having to withhold awards.
1. HOBBS & WHITING’S BOUTONNEUX BABY BUCO AVEC RAPANOOEY JW This dog was correct in size, excellent bone ratio to body; well ribbed, sound angulations, good masculine head without exaggeration; tight feet and he moved forward well and produced drive from behind in a balanced action retaining his topline, correct tail set but a touch short. I appreciate the weather of late has not been the best for dogs with a white ground coat but how anybody could present a dog with such a dirty coat in the show ring leaves a lot to be desired when most folk had taken the trouble to clean and present dogs excellently, after all it is a ‘beauty’, show as well and clean coats are part of the package and as a result one could not consider this dog for any further top awards. I can make the distinction between top dirty and obvious results of skin problem manifesting outwards.
2. GARTON’S JABBAWOCK THE GOLDEN SNITCH This liver boy was of a different mould being generally of a finer cast. Nevertheless he went through his paces with a well schooled steady action, clean head lines well set ears, down an elegant neck into correct shoulders, good ribbing clear even coloured spotting and nice tight feet, strong loin overall correct body ratio.
3. ROSE’S CANIDALS RED WHITE AND BLUE

POST GRAD D
[4.2]
1. GEE’S MANORROY MAGNETIC CHARM Ghost face but clear and full nose & eye pigmentation, nicely set and used ears with broken markings. Clean neck lines although I wish folk would sort out where the lead is on a neck rather than half way pulling the skin into folds. Clean tight coat with clarity of pigment in spotting, firm ribbing & topline, elbows a touch loose, lovely cat feet and generally moving true.
2. TAYLOR & MACKINNON’S FRANKISH HOPE AND GLORY FOR KINGPIPIN Density in black pigmentation throughout, rangier type with a long head but good neck, feet again in the longer cast mould and not such a positive topline as he was inclined to stand slightly roached together with a steep upper arm, making him narrower through the front. His tail never stopped wagging and he exhibited a good depth in brisket.

MID LIMIT D [6]
1. CUTHBERTSON’S KALSIDONI CAMEO A powerful firm conditioned dog who has many attributes, dense pigmentation on a good ground of white, ample chest room, clean elegant neck into well positioned shoulders, super round boned straight forelegs and tight feet, elbows well in. Well ribbed through to nice tuck in loin, strong level back despite what an unfortunately placed row of spots tried to tell me, excellent width to thigh in hard muscular condition that allowed a powerful rhythmic action on the move. Just a touch strong in head relative to his body, a total male in demeanour & showmanship.
2. PRATT’S GWYNMOR FINCH HATTON AT SOLOSTAR [IMP] Another well presented one with excellent pigmented even spotting throughout on a pure white ground, sound in bone relative ratio, good chest, forequarters down to nice feet, clean ribbing through to loin space for the rotation and movement of rear legs, firm body condition, correct croup, well set on tail, such a pity that this dog exhibited a reserved attitude at times thus failing to project himself in the final analysis. Proportionate head, sound muzzle, clear eyes nicely broken spotting on ears. He covered the ground with a long and balanced stride.
3. CLELAND’S CANDIDALS KING OF THE WORLD BY DEOVOLANTE

LIMIT
[12.2]
1. WRIGHT’S MILLBELLE LITHIUM JW Black upstanding dog, good expression and he used his ears, clean flowing neck and ample chest room, well ribbed with nice tuck up firm loins. Proportionate bone throughout, good rear angulations but inclined to be a little weak in hock joints when standing, firm body condition correct tail set & length. Clear dense spotting on a tight white coat. Does not need his head to develop anymore in balance, also quite a fidget when standing and in set up was inclined to be over angulated in front pushing his shoulders out so spoiling the picture, covered the ground well with an even stride fore and good propulsion from rear.
2. LAMB’S DALPETRO DECAPRIO Liver dog of an even colour that was on his toes but of a very slighter mould than the first, nevertheless, good size, great spotty face in proportion with complete pigmentation, clarity in eye and ears nicely broken & well used, correct bite. Good shoulder angulations, firm topline and deep capacious ribs, with generally clean lines throughout. Moved out with an even stride and balance in a steady gait, firm thighs overall in sound muscular condition, and character of a good demeanour.
3.WINCUP’S TAMILANDA PANTHER LILLY JW Sh.CM

OPEN
[8.2]
1. ALEXANDER’S CH OFFORDALE CHEVALIER JW Strong set up without any coarseness, proportionate head, clear eyes, sound muzzle well used ears to make the complete head picture, elegant clean neck through to correct shoulder inclination and a firm topline retained on the move, following through to a correct tail set & length. In hard condition and one who exhibited a quality second thigh, sadly missing in many today. Tight feet with correctly worn nails at the end of super straight round bone, clear chest space, correct rear angulations also when viewed from behind. Deep and sound ribbing with firm loin and space to move as he did with power & drive, it was a pity that his handler disrupted his balanced action by holding his head up and yanking him too much in the initial stages of his movement. His action became so true when he was allowed to settle and he ended up with the prestigious award of Dog CC and then BIS. Congratulations.
2. HARTLEY’S CH CREAGANBREC THE FAVOURITE AT MIRAGUA JW
This dog also has many commendable attributes amongst which are his dense black pigmented spots on a clear short white coat, ample bone without exaggeration, proportionate head which just lacked the length and elegance of number one, but he had beautiful dark eyes, just a touch of loose skin below chin on the neck but a good reach of neck down into depth of chest with sound ribbing. Tight feet nice spring in pasterns and in firm muscular condition that allowed his action to be forward going. If the award was for showmanship he would have won it hands down as he was so much enjoying his time in the ring. Res CC What a pity that he did not stay to challenge for Res BIS
3. CROFT’S DOUBTWELL SHOW STOPPER JW

SPECIAL JUNIOR VETERAN
[4.1]
1. LEWIS’S MAN ABOUT TOWN AT HUNTERSWOOD JW Sh.CM A masculine black boy with super round bone and proportionate in all aspects. Good ribbing, firm topline, good chest space, well set & correct length of tail, nice size and as we say a ‘leg in each corner’, that proved to allow such great balance during movement that he looked like he could go on for ever and proved that one does not have to rush round the ring to prove anything. Excellent feet, tight coat, even spotting, head in proportion just a slight mark over his nose from obviously a harness rubbing but it did not detract from his lovely dark eyes and ear carriage. Best Dog Veteran & Best VIS.
2. STOCKS’S CH DALMARK THE SHADED MOON AT NOSPAR JW
A liver Champion in more ways than one, so genuine and with lots of character he was showing his socks off. Good head & expression, clean reach of neck down to sound shoulders and good chest capacity. Proportionate bone down to tight feet, correct rear angulations and another who moved out well with an effortless gait. One who was in sound muscular condition also with a good width of thigh a pleasure to handle.
3. CUTTS’S CH KAYTIAN KALYPSO TO MARZELINA

BRACE

Such a treat to see two Dalmatians trotting round the ring in unison and both sets did themselves justice with hardly anything between them, both black, both very similar in size and markings.
1. Thorner’s
2. Neath-Duggan’s.

Bitches

First I would like to thank the officers of the joint clubs committee for their hospitality, the caterer for a superb meal. My personal thanks goes’ to my very able stewards firstly Stef Kazana and Josie Kaal for keeping the order of the ring and myself in check.

Now down to the nitty gritty stuff, I found temperaments to be exceptional with only a few showing slight ring nerves particularly in the lower classes, as possibly there 1st time out at such a big event, it can be very daunting for young puppies as it is very hard to recreate a big show atmosphere, just give them time. I had many licks and kisses this to me shows that the dog is happy to be there. Sadly I found many what I would call grubby dogs i.e. not been cleaned, I know this weather is exceptional but there is still no excuse we all have sinks and hot water and soap, we wouldn’t expect a model to go on a cat walk dirty, this again goes for feet and nails, I found some outstanding feet and then on the other end of the scale there were an awful lot of long toes, hare shaped feet and nails that to me had never seen the clippers, the standard calls for thick padded round cat like shaped feet, good feet can be bred into a line but also feet can be much improved by exercise and nail trimming.

The first two classes were well I can only say Wow!! There is more than one or two in there that I’m sure will be future champions, I didn’t have enough place cards so sadly a few good exhibits were card less. The middle classes again have some lovely exhibits, my Open again was very strong I was splitting hairs and down to the wire all these lovely bitches will change places I’m sure sometime in the future

Coming to best in show, the dog and the bitch, this was very difficult as my self and my co. judge Julia Swinburn were presented with what I can only say was two excellent specimens of the breed they were well matched both excellent colouring, lovely heads and both moved with power and drive. In the end it was decided to call the referee Mrs Cathie McCarthy and the dog won overall, many congratulations to Jenny Alexander, but my bitch CC winner put in one performance of her life, absolutely all credit to Elaine Emmett and Dalliviro Reba Mac at Ellemstra JW Sh.CM.
