It gave me great pleasure to judge dogs at this year’s ch show. It was my third appointment for this prestigious show as in 1979 I judged bitches & in 1977 I judged the dogs.
The venue was the East Hall of the KC Building at Stoneleigh with good sized rings for the exhibits to show themselves & their movement. The entry was very mixed for breed type, so it gave me much food for thought.
One point of concern was the stuffing of food into the dog’s mouths while I was trying to assess it, I do hope that it’s a habit that is not taking over. It’s disrespectful to the judge to have to assess the dogs head & also check teeth with a full mouth.
Surely we can train our dogs to stand still to be examined & reward correct behaviour afterwards. I had to ask a number of exhibitors not to feed while I was judging.

1 Alexander’s Ch Offordale Chevalier, I gave this dog a RCC when a junior & have followed his progress big time. Today when standing he looked heavy around the shoulders & brisket. His spotting & coat were good & he was in hard condition. Although alone in the ring the handler had him on tight lead so he could not move with freedom. His front movement was all over the place.

BRENDA SMITH
Bitches
A great honour to judge bitches at this most prestigious breed club show, my grateful thanks to the BDC for their warm hospitality and to my two competent and hardworking stewards. I had a most enjoyable day, with the pleasure of judging some beautiful bitches. The depth of quality in the bitch classes provided the opportunity to find some excellent and true to type examples of the breed with both CC and Res CC awards very strongly contested. It is always very encouraging to see plenty of promising young stars of the future standing alongside senior representatives of the breed, a positive reflection of how I feel the breed has improved since the last time I judged. I was delighted to co-judge BIS with Brenda Smith and was gratified that we agreed on all of our joint decisions today. Please do bear in mind that warming up your dog (just like an athlete) before your come into the ring makes a huge, positive difference to your dog’s movement; also maintaining a straight line on the move preferably on a loose lead will allow your dog to demonstrate tracking to the best advantage. I found temperaments were uniformly sound which is of great importance in any breed. Finally, thank you for accepting my decisions so sportingly.

Junior Handling Report
Class A JHA 6-11 years
1st Olivia Dore, age 8, I was very impressed with this young lady’s handling of her charge. She demonstrated some lovely loose lead work, keeping her dog’s attention as she completed her patterns at a good pace with straight lines, but twirled her dog at the corner of her triangle thus coming between me and her dog.
Class B JHA 12-16 years
1st Sam Jennings, age 15, a very competent and calm handler who correctly completed his pattern work with lovely straight lines, working with an up lead, but dropping the lead towards the end, clearly demonstrating his versatility and control. He was aware of my positioning at all times and this along with his sympathetic handling of his young charge won him the title of Overall Handler.
