BRITISH DALMATIAN CLUB OPEN SHOW
1st NOVEMBER 2014
EAST HALL KC BUILDING STONELEIGH
It was a great honour to judge this show and I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for the invitation and the exhibitors for the excellent entry with few absentees.
It is quite a while since I last judged and I found that there was a great variation in type, and that the quality was much higher in bitches than in dogs. However, there were some very promising puppies so the future remains bright. Temperaments were on the whole good, which is important as the Dalmatian should be a happy outgoing dog, although a few puppies were a little overawed by the experience. Short tails are becoming a problem in the breed and this aspect need to be watched as it spoils the outline of the dog. A number of dogs had skin problems and a few were frankly dirty which is a shame as it is, after all, a beauty competition. The ring was large with plenty of room for the dogs to move although some dogs felt a little unsure on the surface. Ringcraft (or geometry?) was somewhat lacking as only a few exhibitors actually managed the triangle that I asked for. I was looking for the dogs to be moved at a comfortable pace on a loose lead. Stringing dogs up or moving too fast spoils the dog’s natural gait and often gives an impression of strange front movement. My main winners were a credit to the breed and a pleasure to judge and I would have been proud to own any of the bitches in the line up for best bitch.
Minor Puppy Dog – 7 (1Abs)
A lovely start to the day with a class of real quality puppies
1. Alexander’s OFFORDALE PICASSO
A superb 7 month b/w boy who stole my heart. Well balanced for one so young, correct angulations fore and rear, nice topline and tailset, good bone, tight feet, attractive head, clear spotting. Still obviously a puppy but movement which flowed around the ring putting many of the older dogs to shame. A happy outgoing temperament which never flagged. Handled extremely well. Pleased to award him Best Puppy Dog And BPIS will look forward to seeing his future achievements.
2. Richardson’s MAPPLEWELL DYNAMITE
How fortunate for any judge to get two puppies of this quality in any class. Another lovely 7 month old but this time liver spotted. Lighter spotting but spots are clear and even. Excellent pigmentation. Has a lovely head with a kind gentle expression and a delightful temperament. A little shorter in loin that 1, however well balanced with a deep chest. Moved soundly with a good even pace. Went on to win 3 further classes and impressed enough to win Best Liver Dog and Best Liver in Show.
3. Donnelly’s TAMALINDA BERRY ICE LILLY
Puppy Dog – 4 (1Abs)
1. Richardson’s MAPPLEWELL DYNAMITE
2. Wallington’s ROVINJDAL DARE TO DREAM
10 month old l/w. Lovely bone and good feet. Moved soundly. Narrower through at the moment but going through a teenage stage. Should mature on to make a nice dog.
3. Samkin’s RAPANOOEY RIDHA
Junior Dog – 5
1. Cadden’s PHADANTE JAMBALAHA
This dog caught my eye as soon as he came into the ring. B/w with smart clear spotting on a pure white coat. Nice head and neck. Well laid shoulder and excellent topline which he kept on the move. This boy is very high spirited and unfortunately his handler’s nerves got the better of him. However, he kept still just long enough for me to assess his many qualities and when settled moved extremely well and with drive.
2. Gardinor’s JAMELSLEY PYRACANTHA AT DAKATA
Another quality b/w dog and a close decision in the placings. Slightly smaller frame than 1 but good angulations, deep chest and good tail set. Slightly preferred head of 1. Well handled and moved around the ring with drive and purpose.
3. Brand’s KALSIDONI CARMELIAN
Yearling Dog - 2
1. Cadden’s PHADANTE JAMBALAHA
2. Addy’s CREAGANBEC JACOB MARLEY
B/W dog with really dark pigmentation and spotting. Moved well but head not as masculine as 1.
Maiden Dog – 5 (1Abs)
1. Richardson’s MAPPLEWELL DYNAMITE
2. Donnelly’s TAMALINDA BERRY ICE LILLY
3rd in good Minor Puppy class. Nice b/w, attractive spotting, good angulations and moved well. However needs to carry a little more weight. Once he has bodied up should have a bright future.
3. Wallington’s ROVINGDAL DARE TO DREAM
Novice Dog – 5 (1Abs)
1. Richardson’s MAPPLEWELL DYNAMITE
2. Donnelly’s TAMALINDA BERRY ICE LILLY
3. Talbot’s RAPANOOEY MOAI
Graduate Dog - 2
1. Gardinor’s JAMELSLEY PYRACANTHA AT DAKATA
2. Hurst’s PHILCARTHOM XCALIBER AT FINNIDAL
Mature dog in excellent condition, nice temperament and well handled. Good deep chest and nice bone. Preferred rear angulation of 1.
Post Graduate Dog – 4
Slightly disappointing class, particularly numerically. This is where I would hope to find all the good dogs of the future.
1. Tingey’s DALLYADOR ARAMIS
Attractive upstanding l/w dog. Nice outline and a good head with a kind expression. Moved well but needed a little more drive.
2. Kembrey’s DALMARK THE PINOT GRIGIO
L/W dog of correct size and colour with well laid shoulder and nice turn of stifle. A dog that I have always admired from the ringside so disappointed that today he chose not to move as I know he can.
3. Scott Allen & Davis’s TOLUTIM YAFFLE
Limit Dog – 4 (1Abs)
1. Hobbs and Whiting’s BOUTONNEUX BABY BUCO AVEC RAPANOOEY
B/w boy of correct size, excellent make and shape and very happy temperament. Moved and handled well but unfortunately he was not in best coat condition today.
2. William’s PHADANTE BRIGHTON ROCK
L/w dog. Nicely balanced, good tailset and topline. Moved true.
3. Baker’s KLARKESON A KIND OF MAGIC
Open Dog – 6 (2Abs)
1. Casey’s MOYGLASS PROFESSOR PLUM JW ShCM
What a lovely dog. It is true that from the ringside his spotting is not his fortune, but once he moves any slight cosmetic fault can be forgiven. This dog is exactly what a Dalmatian should be. Strong and well muscled but no hint of coarseness. An attractive head with a kind expression and an excellent temperament. Correct angulation giving flowing lines. Well let down hocks and correct bend of stifle. Good bone and correct tight cat feet. Easily the best mover on the day. Moves round the ring with power and grace aided by his handler who handles him competently and discreetly. I could easily imagine this dog running behind a carriage all day. Delighted to award him Best Dog, Best Black Dog And BIS. I hope that he soon becomes the Champion he so richly deserves to be.
2 Wright’s MILLBELLE LITHIUM JW
Another very attractive B/w dog who was unlucky to meet 1 on such sparkling form. Good masculine head, excellent pigmentation and spotting. Happy outgoing personality. Moved correctly and with drive. I see from the catalogue he is the sire of the Best puppy so is obviously passing on his many virtues. Should also have a very bright future. Res Best Dog
3. Harrison-Stratford’s DALKREVE DARK DRAGON
Special Junior Veteran Dog -2
1. Baker’s ONEOWUN OHIO
Handsome 8 year old b/w boy not looking his age. Dark pigment , nice head and gentle demeanour. Still in very good shape. An unfortunate injury to his dew claw, whilst not affecting his movement, made him a little less confident on the day, but he put on a good enough performance to merit Best Veteran Dog
2. Moate’s MAJOR SHEER WILL AT SUNDOWN
Exuberant 7 year old who had obviously not been advised that he is now a veteran. Kind head and still in hard condition. Just slightly longer cast than 1.
Special Senior Veteran Dog – No Entries
Minor Puppy Bitch – 11 (3Abs)
A class of nice babies. Some of the unplaced girls needed a little more ringcraft to increase their confidence in the ring.
1. David’s DALTICINO INTERLAGOS FROM DALLYDYL
A beautiful l/w girl who will surely go far. Only 6 months old, so very much a baby, but with all the essentials in place. Attractive spotty face, well broken ears and a happy outgoing temperament. Good lay of shoulder and pleasing hind quarters. Strongly built but still feminine and moved extremely well for one so young, keeping her topline. In the challenge for best puppy bitch she was tired after a long day but I liked her enormously. One to watch for the future.
2. Alexander’s OFFORDALE LARISSA
Another lovely puppy, this time 7 mth b/w and on another day these two could easily change places. Slightly shorter coupled than one, but again very young and still developing. Charming personality, clear black spotting, well carried ears. Moved well, striding out purposefully. Well handled. Sister to my Best Puppy – obviously a very successful mating.
3. Tingey’s DALLYADOR THE ENCHANTRESS
Puppy Bitch – 9 (1Abs)
1. Petersen’s DAEDALUS CLIFF ANGEL
Striking 11 month girl, with dense black pigment and bold spotting. Very dark eyes and nice expression. Deep chest, good topline and tail set. Moved with drive. This girl has great ring presence and will surely mature on to trouble the best. Best Puppy Bitch.
2. Hobbs & Whiting’s RAPANOOEY RHONA
Smaller, very feminine 10 month b/w. Shapely girl, but rear angulation not as good as one and moved a little close behind.
3. Wall’s WINFLASH CHERRY PIE
Junior Bitch – 6 (1Abs)
1. Christie’s JEZABEL THE ASTONISHING SOPHTSPOT
A strong very soundly constructed young b/w bitch. Nice head with well broken ears and good reach of neck. Quite tall but good overall balance. Excellent pigmentation and attractive spotting, happy disposition. Is well muscled and has the ability to move well but today was pulling her handler. When she settles to move on a loose lead she is very promising indeed.
2. Dawson’s WASHAKIE ENDLESS SUMMER
Elegant B/w bitch a little smaller than 1. Well let down hocks, good bend of stifle, tight cat feet, nice lay of shoulder. Moved well with a long free stride. Pretty feminine head, but not using her ears to best advantage.
3. Neath-Duggan’s BUFREY HEY DIDDDLE DIDDLE
Yearling Bitch – 2
1. Hartley & Griffith’s CREGANBREC GLORY BE AT MIRAGUA
A very nice femine b/w bitch with a good outline, excellent tailset and carriage. Moderate sized but correctly constructed. Handled and showed extremely well on a loose lead which showed off her effortless movement.
2. Jenning’s CUBALIBRE DREAM ON
B/w bitch, slightly finer head but lovely dark eyes and good expression. Well handled by he young handler, moved and showed well. Deserving of her first place in a subsequent class.
Maiden Bitch – 4 (2Abs)
1. Tingey’s DALLYADOR THE ENCHANTRESS
3rd in the strong MPB class. Taller bitch with pretty liver spotting. Moved Ok, but needs to mature to attain more overall balance.
2. Hobbs & Whiting’s RAPANOOEY RHAPSODY
Compact b/w bitch. Lovely dark eye. Good deep chest with correct tuck up. Moved OK. Carrying a little too much weight over her shoulders today.
Novice Bitch – 6 (2Abs)
1. Jenning’s CUBALIBRE DREAM ON
2. Samkin’s PORTUNES OASIS
Pretty l/w bitch with very attractive spotting. Not quite as confident as 1 but moved well and her young handler worked hard to get the best from her.
3. Guernsey’s BLAZINSTUNTS INDIAN SKYE AT KILMARTIN
Graduate Bitch – 6 (1Abs)
1. Thorne’s CASTLETOP PENDERYN
Very feminine neat, compact b/w bitch. Well broken ears framing a nicely shaped head with a lovely soft expression. Well muscled, with excellent hind quarters and good tailset. Moved out well at the correct pace which showed off her nice even gait.
2. Finlay’s DVOJICA BLACKSWAN AT DALFIN
Well named as she has a beautiful swanlike neck. Lovely dark pigment, happy temperament. Little separated these two nice bitches.
3. Jenkins’ JEWELRUBY QUEEN
Post Graduate Bitch – 7
1. Gardner’s DVOJICA BLACK AGAIN AT WRENDRAGGE
A lovely b/w bitch with a superb temperament who gave me the nicest kisses of the day! Very well handled and looked good both in pose and on the move. Nicely balanced girl who pressed hard for top honours in a lineup of extremely good bitches.
2. Suggett’s DALESBRED GEEBEE GOLD FOR KINTEGUS
A taller l/w girl with heavier even spotting of good colour. Nicely constructed but rear movement not as positive as 1.
3. Rourke’s TAMALINDA WILD LILLY WITH ROURKESTAR
Limit Bitch – 12 (1 Abs)
A class of top class bitches which really merited the old cliché ‘could have done with more first prizes’. A real pleasure to judge such nice girls.
1. Moate’s LEIAHART HONOLULU HONEY AT SUNDOWNDAL
Stunning b/w lady who really is at the top of her game. From the top of her beautifully shaped head to the tip of her correctly set waggy tail she says ‘class’! Clear spotting an immaculately presented white background, good angulation fore and aft, moving effortlessly with long even strides. Great pleasure to award her Best Bitch and RBIS . She is only just 2 years old so I hope to see her do great things in the ring over the next couple of years. To see her and the BIS dog moving together around the ring was a delight.
2. Fillingham’s TAMALINDA BLUE WATER LILLY AT DOTSADAISY
Another beautiful b/w bitch, good size and substance whilst still obviously feminine. Happy girl with a constantly wagging tail, moved well keeping her topline. Had to be content with being the bridesmaid today but I was very pleased to award her Res Best Bitch. Another who should go far.
3. Gardinor’s DALISPOTS DUNYANA AT DAKATA
Open Bitch – 7 (2Abs)
1. Whincup’s TAMALINDA HOT PINK
A very pretty l/w bitch. Not a girl who stands out in a crowd, but when you go over her you discover how sound and typical she is. Very attractive head and nice expression. Good unexaggerated movement. Best Liver Bitch.
2. Addy’s CREAGANBREC EVIE ROSE
Slightly more compact b/w bitch. Lovely dark pigment, dark eyes and happy disposition. Moved well.
3. Wright’s BOUTONNEUX APHRODIE FOR MILBELLE
Special Junior Veteran Bitch – 5 (1 Abs 1W)
1. Tingey’s CH PHAELAND PHOENIX PHOREVER BY DALLYADOR
L/w girl still in fine form and not showing her veteran status. Beautifully marked, well constructed and moving with ease. Still displaying all the virtues which made her a well deserved champion. Best Veteran Bitch and Best Veteran in Show.
2. Wright’s ANGELIC APHRODITE FOR MILLEBELLE JW ShCM
Another happy 7 year old looking as young as ever. Pretty, typical b/w girl behaving like a puppy and still moving with drive. A phantom pregnancy spoiled her outline today, but otherwise lovely and a credit to her owner.
3. Scott-Allen & Davis’s TOLUTIM ZAFFRE
Special Senior Veteran Bitch – 3 (1Abs)
These two splendid old ladies paid tribute to the longevity of our lovely breed. Both thoroughly enjoying their day out and still moving as well as many a young dog.
1. Richardson’s MAPPLEWELL HOT FUDGE
A lovely l/w bitch who has kept her figure and does not look her 11 ½ years. A lovely head with a very noble expression. She was handled today by a very young lady with whom she obviously has a huge affinity and together they made a lovely team as they moved round the ring. Congratulations to them both. I learned afterwards that this show marks her retirement from the ring and she certainly went out on a high.
2. Wills’ DALLYVISTA SCANDALOUS RISK
B/w girl 12 ½ years young and still moving soundly and showing with style. Another who has kept her figure and he attractive lines. Only her coat slightly betrayed her age but otherwise a real credit to her owner and breeder.
