WELKS 2022 Judged by Dr Sidney Bolt
West of England Ladies Kennel Society April 2022

Judge: Sidney Bolt

Many thanks to exhibitors for such a wonderful entry. I decided to judge the breed outside being dry but somewhat a little cold to begin with. Unfortunately, construction work started close to the ring which did affect some exhibitors. Surprising that the Society allowed this to happen during a show is an understatement.

Our breed’s observation. Sadly, in my opinion I think we have lost breed ‘type’ and it was quite a challenge trying to judge to our breed standard making it extremely difficult to get into any form of ‘flow’.

In some of the lower puppy classes one or two were a little timid which allowances can be made for. However, the breed standard asks for an outgoing dog which in some later classes was not in abundance and unfortunately some good dogs suffered placing’s in view of this. Again, possibly a result of the construction work far to close to the show ring.

Some dogs were over muscled and conversely, many were overweight, losing the elegance that our breed standard commands

We are guardians of this breed for only but a short time so please think long and hard about your breeding program, ask advice from successful breeders. We must maintain type for this beautiful breed which is set by our breed standard.

Veteran Dog (4,1)
A class I always have a problem with judging with the belief that our breed are in their prime at seven years old and how unfair to judge a dog of this age with one being ten, eleven or older. Let’s face it, a seven year old may not ‘make old bones’.
1st – Christie’s Ch Sophspot Gold Dust. Magnificent well balanced seven year old liver dog in terrific condition and correct to breed type. He just seems to have got even better with age. This dog has an excellent head with good kind expression, correct skull with well placed and carried ear having correct eye colour and pigmentation. Strong through the front but not overdone with good length of neck leading to strong wither, excellent well laid shoulder with correct angulation and level top line. He has correct tail set which is well carried on the move of which he moves with drive and vigour easily covering the ground with good reach and drive from his rear quarters. Quality dog who is obviously so well balanced.
2nd – Neath-Duggan & Baker’s Ch Buffrey Incognito by Dalleaf. Definitely not a dog that was incognito. There was no hiding his identity being another quality seven year old dog who unfortunately met first today. Compact black and white dog of good proportion having handsome head and good pigmentation. He has a good reach of neck and well laid wither and carries a good level top line stood and on the move Good depth of chest and length of loin. Immaculate black on white well decorated coat. Handled to his advantage stood and on the move – take note new exhibitors.
3rd – Hurst’s Philcarthom Xcaliber at Finnidal

Minor Puppy Dog
(4,0)
1st – Page’s Olilou Heavenly Hamilton by Winflash Seven month old black and white dog of quality and substance. A dog with the deepest black pigmentation presented on good dense white coat. Just as you want in a puppy of this age good bone with substance in his body. Lovely spotted face with typical soft puppy expression. A dog with good front and width of chest, nice reach of neck and developing wither. Has good depth of brisket and is well coupled. He is a great moving dog fore and aft despite being such a youngster. A dog that will not disappoint.
2nd – Croft’s Dalmark The Rulebreaker A dog with not quite the confidence of first just yet but still a youngster with time on his side. Eight month old nicely decorated black and white who is well off for body and substance. A dog with good head and width of skull and well broken ear. He has a good width of fore chest with correct lay of shoulder, nice spring of rib, level top line and correct set of tail. Moved well but just needs that confidence and ring presence to shine.
3rd – Davies Maddidalli Causing a Storm

Puppy Dog
(5,0)
1st – Wilkins Gloriandus Petersburg at Salvadorada This was a nice puppy dog with much quality about him and potential for the future. A twelve month old dog of correct size and coupling having good substance and bone. He has a good head framed with well carried broken ear and good width of skull. A dog with strong front and developing wither. Well laid shoulder and good front. He carries a level top line on the move which is complimented by his tail carriage. Be careful not to over develop him and try to maintain that masculine elegance.
2nd – Smiths Rapanooey Sugar Donut This is another quality dog with strong future having good body and correct coupling. Attentive expression, with good head and pigmentation. Preferred his length of neck over first leading to defined wither, level top line, defined croup and well carried tail. He is well angulated with good turn of stifle. His body is nicely decorated with good dense black spotting. Well in tune with his handler on the move with drive and conviction.
3rd – Bridge, Meyer & Britton’s Akoni Athos Comte de la Fere

Junior Dog
(4,1)
Sadly, the construction work began close to the show ring during this class close to the ring putting off normally even the most confident of dogs which was unfortunately reflected in some of the placings here today.
1st – Robbins & Hensman’s Jasquarella Edge of Winter. This dog stood out for me in this class. He is a well balanced black and white dog with handsome head and kind expression Shows to his advantage which made him stand out in this class.. Obviously enjoying his day out which was reflected in his movement. He is a dog of correct size with much elegance and not over done in anyway. Nice pleasing head with correct length of muzzle, nice stop and ear carriage that framed his face. Well proportioned body in top condition having good reach of neck, level top line and correct tailset which is carried well on the move. He has great rear angulation with strong rear quarters powering him on the move.
2nd – Fellows’s Faernaur Shooting Star Another striking dog who was unfortunate to meet first another who was well presented stood but slightly unsettled on the move. Black and white dog with classic markings. Good body with correct length of leg, good front, nice reach of neck, good wither and top line stood and on the move. Good head with expression. Correct lay of shoulder and body muscling up nicely.

1st – Robbins & Hensman’s Jasquarella Edge of Winter See winner of Junior Dog.
2nd- Tingey’s Dallydor Lockdown Legend A dog I have always liked but unfortunately today something was not right with him seeming unsettled either by the cold or construction noise which is completely out of character. Quality liver dog beautifully decorated and of correct colour who is balanced and well coupled. A dog with good body that is well angulated. He has good length of neck, is muscling up well over the shoulder and has good spring of rib offering good depth of brisket. On the move he does what a Dalmatian should covering the ground with ease. I feel one to watch for the future.
3rd – Richards Hafwenna We Will Rock You

Novice Dog

1st – Rosser’s Dalstorm Incan Warrior Nicely made well bodied black dog of balanced proportion that stood and presented himself to his advantage. Good masculine head of correct width, stop an muzzle length who has great pigment – handsome really. Good neck leading to well defined wither and good front with well laid shoulder. He is well sprung for rib and had good loin, top line and strong rear quarters powering him on the move. A dog with much potential.
2nd - Bridge, Meyer & Britton’s Akoni Athos Comte de la Fere This is a nice dog that has good construction and make but carries the unfortunate burden of a second crop of spotting. You have to look beyond this because he is an honest well made dog with good head and expression and strongest pigment. He has a good length of neck leading to good strong fore-quarters and having good lay of shoulder, defined wither, well bodied chest and hind quarters. A well coupled dog having good top line and correct tail set. He moved well in this class with much drive and purpose.

A dog with a handsome head of good proportion having well placed and nicely broken ear. He has a good length of neck, good upper arm, length of leg and correct shoulder placement flowing well into a level top line and correct tail set. He is well ribbed with good depth of chest and plenty of heart room. Moved with elegance and yet good positive drive. One of the very few dogs here today and typical of this kennel, that was in good hard condition the way a Dalmatian should be. I think he has time yet to mature and would like to see him in a year.

Veteran Bitch
(9,2)
Very hard to pick between first and second two nice bitches with first winning on movement today.
1st – Warehams’s Tamilanda Blue Lilly at Dotsadaisey A bitch I have always liked who did not show her eleven years and had her day today. Pretty black bitch with feminine head of correct proportion. Good neck with well set shoulder and good front, nicely sprung rib correct length of loin and nicely coupled. She has good rear angulation with nice bend of stifle. On the move she did not show her age but moved seamlessly around the ring with a pleasing outline good extension and front reach.
2nd – Gardener’s Ch Dvojica Black Again at Wrendragge Ten year old black/white bitch shown in great condition and form. Bitch with a lovely feminine head of good balanced proportion and correct pigmentation, good width of skull with well carried broken ear. She has the better length of neck than first into a well laid shoulder well defined wither and deep brisket. Body of correct over size and proportion that is well balanced having good top line, length of loin, well set croup flowing into a well set tail. Movement that belies her age driving and flowing around the ring. Nice bitch.

Watch out for these two puppies.

A bitch that is sound on the move fore and aft
2nd – Page’s Winflash Chanel Paris Another puppy full of potential. Striking decoration of good proportion who is a well balanced puppy. Hard to pick between one and two with first being slightly more outgoing. This girl has everything you would want to breed in a puppy having good body, bone, substance, again great movement fore and aft. She has a good head with pleasing expression albeit a suspicious look – but that could be because of me. Again, another with good neck into correct lay of shoulder, nice wither and developing front. Well off for bone, good spring of rib and depth of brisket. She has a nicely coupled body and a well developing hind quarter. Nicely decorated with dense black spotting on whitest background.

2nd – Watts & Jackson-Peatling’s Tamilanda Continental Ziva Another good bitch but one with plenty of substance compared to first whom I preferred the elegance of. Black bitch with densest black pigment well set on whitest contrasting background – striking. A nice head with naughty expression, nicely feminine with good pigmentation. Strong neck into well developed shoulder and strong front. She has a good spring of rib, deep brisket. Looks shorter coupled than first but i think this is due to a more developed body. Good rear quarters with correct angulation. This bitch moved really well with good drive and purpose and covers the ground easily.
3rd – Lambs Dalpetro Dotty

Junior Bitch
(12,2)
1st – Fellows’s Faernaur Celeste (Res BCC) Not something I like to giving RCC from junior believing much can change on such a young dog but today this girl gave her all and commanded attention. She came into the ring with ring presence and attitude and displaying a confidence right from the start. Well made bitch yet to fully mature but with good expression of correct body and type and moving well. She displays sound confirmation for one so young. She has a pleasing expression which is enhanced by a good eye. Although still developing, nevertheless she has good bone, angulated front with good length of upper arm. Her level topline coupled with a developing rear quarter produced an attractive profile both stood and on the move. Covers the ground with ease.
2nd – Saunders and David’s Dallydyl Honey Trap Quality liver bitch who was unlucky today to meet first. Both very different types of dog but first had the animation and ring presence I was looking for. Again, one who is developing nicely and who is well made with good substance. She has a good pleasing head, with well placed nicely broken ear. She has a suspicious aloof look to be expected in a youngster. Good skull width, correct sop and length of muzzle. She has a good length of neck flowing into correct lay of shoulder and developing wither. Well sprung rib and correct loin offers a well coupled bitch. Hind quarters are developing nicely driving her well on the move. Would like to see her again in a year or so.

She has a well balanced body of correct coupling , good turn of stifle with strong rear quarters and developing second thigh. A bitch with good top line and correct tail set.
