Dalmatian Club of Scotland 2021 Judged by Mrs Chris Pickup
Dalmatian Club of Scotland Championship Show – 20th August 2021

Christina C Pickup

It was an honour to judge this very friendly club show, held for the first time in England due to Covid. Thank you to the committee for inviting me. Sincere thanks to my hard working stewards, Diane and Lesley who did a great job and kept things moving. It was a very long day for exhibitors with two Championship shows in one day and so I’d like to thank exhibitors firstly, for their entry, and secondly, for their consideration when I was going over their dogs, it was very much valued and appreciated. As always the best Dalmatians exhibited the quality in both conformation and correct movement which is detailed in our breed standard, but sadly there were a minority which lacked any depth of quality and deviated from the standard in both structure and movement. The best exhibits had powerful yet economic movement with good reach and drive. These dogs would be able to carry out the traditional role of a carriage dog and a range of sporting or other activities. I was sad to see some very pink feet, which even the grass could not hide, poor coat conditions and variations in weight, which can be remedied, whereas poor feet and poor front assembly remain an issue in the breed. There are far too many high set tails, more so than two years ago when I last judged. I was pleased to find temperaments as good as ever with the younger Dalmatians happy to be in the show ring at last! Some of the exhibits, I had placed at my last appointment and I was delighted to see how they had matured. I loved both my dog and bitch final lineup where the quality was beautifully illustrated and I was thrilled to find some extremely promising youngsters on the scene - I look forward to seeing their progress. The bitch class winners’ quality was strong and consistent and improved from a few years ago. I had some very difficult decisions to make - decisions which could be very different on another day. The quality exhibits are the future of our beloved breed and a real joy to judge – please look after our precious breeds’ future. `
