Dalmatian Club of Scotland 17.05.24
Championship Show :
My thanks to the Club for inviting me to judge and for our super outside ring which was of good size and nice and flat and so good to be able to have all the exhibitors sat round the ring.
Also, for the free refreshment for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed my day with the Dalmatians and their owners, always such a happy and generous group of people. Judging my first classes of baby puppies was delightful too.
The downside of judging is you sometimes see traits creeping in to a breed that are contrary to the Standard, and I have to tell you that the issues with tails and head shapes have me worried. The Standard calls for a slight upward curve to the tail - never curled, yet so many tails are almost vertical and even tails that are vertical and ringed at the end. This can never be acceptable, and completely spoils the outline of the dog. Good tails like any other breed feature need to be bred for and selected for. Please don’t accept what is not right, and judges please do not reward features that are not to Standard. Heads are such an important part of our dogs, we have to look at them a million times a day, and it can be easy to persuade yourself that your dog’s head is correct. Our Standard calls for a head of fair length, skull flat and moderately broad between ears. Muzzle long and powerful. Far too many of our dogs’ heads do not have flat skulls nor do they have muzzles that are long and powerful, but instead have large round skulls with big thick cheeks (alien in Dalmatians) and short and deep muzzles. They are not attractive and if we don’t resolve the issues with heads soon it may be too late.
Every generation of breeders is entrusted to do their best for their Breed and improve if they can, not to change for the worst.
